Time: 10~15minute
Cost: 50 peso
Area of Science and Topic: Pressure and heat
Learning objectives: You can learn that pressure due to air can push and pull objects
Materials: 3Eggs, 1empty gatorade bottle, Pot and water, paper, match
Procedure:
1.Boil 3 eggs in 100 Celsius for 10 minutes
2. Pill off the egg shell carefully, not breaking the eggs
3. Set fire on match and with fire, put matches inside the bottle
4. After putting the match put the egg on top of the bottle
5. Wait and the egg will slowly go inside the bottle
4. After putting the match put the egg on top of the bottle
5. Wait and the egg will slowly go inside the bottle
Why does this happen? Basically, fire requires oxygen, heat and fuel to burn. If there is fire, it will burn oxygen and fuel. In this experient, match functions as fuel. Thus, when match goes inside the bottle, it burns oxygen and match. In this process, the oxygen inside the bottle burns and as a result, the pressure of the bottle decreases. If an egg is put on the bottle, oxygen outside the bottle cant get inside the bottle. At the same time, as fire burns, it expands the volume of air inside the bottle. When fire turns off and heat cools down, the volume of air shrinks and makes pressure inside the bottle less than the outside. Then the oxygen outside the bottle tries to push its way into bottle and eventually pushes the egg. the egg shrinks and gets inside the bottle.
★Tips on the experiment
1. Roll the eggs when you boil because yolk can move to side making egg to break
2. Put eggs right after putting the match inside the bottle because oxygen might get inside
